Tadej Pogačar of Slovenia won the 2020 Tour de France after completing the final stage of the race on Sunday.
On Saturday, Pogačar had defeated compatriot and heavy favourite Primož Roglič in a stunning twist in the penultimate stage's time trial to La Planche des Belles Filles to claim the yellow jersey.
In winning the time trial, Pogačar erased Roglič's 57-second lead in the general classification and all but secured the title ahead of the largely processional final stage.
Pogačar's stunning victory was reminiscent of one on the final day of the 1989 Tour de France when American Greg LeMond won the race by eight seconds over France's Laurent Fignon after beginning the time-trial 50 seconds off the pace.
The 21-year-old is the second youngest ever winner of the prestigious race. Pogačar secured himself a grand birthday present as he is set to turn 22 on Monday.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s Sam Bennett defeated world champion Mads Pedersen in a sprint finish to win stage 21 on the Champs-Elysees sealing the green jersey on the final stage of the event in Paris.
Bennett became the first Irishman to win a major jersey at one of the three Grand Tours since Sean Kelly in 1989.
