The number of COVID-19 cases in Europe surpassed the five million mark on Wednesday, according to an AFP tally.
Some countries on the continent have started reporting resurgences in their daily spikes, forcing them to reimpose containment measures that were lifted earlier.
The United Kingdom, France and Spain have all reported reinstatements of some restrictive measures after some regions recorded a recent rise in their cases.
Russia is the hardest-hit country in Europe by the COVID-19 pandemic, having registered more than 1.12 million infections and over 19,700 deaths.
Spain, France and the U.K. have all reported more than 400,000 confirmed cases with a cumulative death toll exceeding 100,000.
Globally, the number of COVID-19 infections have surpassed the 31.67 million mark, with a death toll topping 972,000.
