Democratic Party presidential candidate Joe Biden will take part in the second presidential debate provided certain measures are in place, an official with his campaign said on Sunday.

Deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield told local media outlet ABC News that Biden will be there provided President Donald Trump is able to participate and the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) implements safety measures.

"We hope that they're going to put in place every adjustment necessary to ensure that it's fully safe," she said.

Bedingfield said Biden certainly looked forward to the opportunity to debate Trump, and his team hoped that the president will be well and able to do that.

"And, obviously, we send President Trump our best," she added. "We hope that he is well and able to debate. If he is, Joe Biden will certainly be there."

Trump is currently recovering in hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus. His medical team said on Sunday that if things went well, he could be discharged as early as Monday.

Biden and Trump clashed in a controversial and chaotic first debate on September 29 prompting the (CPD), the group that manages U.S. presidential election debates, pledged to take steps to ensure a more orderly discussion.

The next presidential debate is scheduled to take place on October 15.
