The number of daily COVID-19 infections in The Netherlands keeps growing, with the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on Tuesday reporting a new daily record of 7,393 cases.

From Sunday to Monday, the RIVM already reported 6,854 new cases. The average number of new infections per day over the last week was 6,272.

The number of deaths rose by 34 from Monday to Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, national broadcaster NOS reported that an 89-year-old Dutch woman, who was infected with COVID-19 for the second time this year, died. This is, according to the NOS, the first death of a person in The Netherlands who was infected twice.

The government is expected to issue additional measures against the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes the respiratory disease during a press conference on Tuesday night.

As the world is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries across the globe -- including China, Russia, Britain and the U.S. -- are racing to find a vaccine.

According to the website of the World Health Organization (WHO), as of Oct. 2, there were 193 COVID-19 candidate vaccines being developed worldwide, and 42 of them were in clinical trials.
