The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa has now reached 1,613,011, with a death toll of 39,403, according to the latest data published by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The continent continues to report contrasting case patterns in different regions, as some countries continue to see declines in their caseloads while other are starting to see a resurgence.

South Africa remains the hardest-hit country by the pandemic on the continent, having recorded 698,184 confirmed cases and 18,309 fatalities.

Morocco is the second-worst-affected Africa country, having registered 163,650 cases and 2,772 deaths.

Egypt, with 105,033 confirmed COVID-19 infections, has reported the third highest caseload, and is the only other African country to have registered more than 100,000 cases. The country has also reported 6,088 deaths.

Further on, Ethiopia has reported 87,169 cases, Nigeria has 60,982 cases and Algeria 53,777 cases.

No other African country has registered more than 50,000 COVID-19 cases.

In terms of deaths, Algeria (1,827), Ethiopia (1,325) and Nigeria (1,116) are the only other countries other than South Africa, Morocco and Egypt to have recorded more than 1,000 fatalities.

In the midst of the pandemic, 1,331,708 patients have so far recovered from the virus on the continent.
