The number of COVID-19 infections in the United States has surpassed the 8 million mark as the country continues battling the pandemic.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, the country had reported 8,008,402 confirmed cases by Friday morning with a death toll of 218,097.

The figures mean the U.S. now accounts for 20.49 percent of the world's caseload and 19.81 percent of the global fatalities.

On the same day the U.S. hit the 8 million caseload mark, the global COVID-19 death toll also surpassed the 1.1 million mark.

Other than the U.S., Brazil (152,460) and India (112,161) are the only other countries that have recorded more than 100,000 COVID-19 deaths.

Cumulatively, the three countries account for 43.87 percent of all reported virus-fatalities.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organization sounded the alarm over increasing caseloads in all regions except Africa.
