The wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, Brigitte Macron, will self-quarantine for seven days after she came into contact with an individual who tested positive for the coronavirus.

A statement from the president's office said the First Lady, 67, had no symptoms of the disease "at this stage" and will self-isolate in accordance with recommendations by health authorities.

"Brigitte Macron was in contact on Thursday October 15 with a person who has been tested positive for COVID-19 this Monday, October 19, and showing symptoms of the disease," the statement said.

Last week, Macron announced a night-time curfew in Paris and eight other cities to control the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

Macron said the curfews were necessary to avoid the risk of hospitals being overwhelmed.

France and a host of other European countries are experiencing a second wave of coronavirus infections. It is one of four countries which have been identified as current coronavirus hot spots on the continent. The others are the UK, Russia and Spain.
