Germany on Thursday imposed coronavirus restrictions on arrivals from the UK following a surge in coronavirus cases.

An advisory published by the German Mission in the UK said the region had been classified as a "high-risk area".

From Saturday, travelers from the UK will be required to quarantine for 14 days unless they test negative within 48 hours of travel or upon entry in Germany.

"The United Kingdom has been strongly affected by COVID-19. From 24 October Germany will classify the United Kingdom as a Covid high-risk area, with the exception of the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey," the Mission said.

Meanwhile, those who get a test done upon arrival, must also undergo quarantine until the result has arrived.

On Thursday, the UK reported 21,242 new COVID-19 cases, a decrease from Wednesday's record number of 26,688. The UK has reported a total of 810,467 cases and 44,347 deaths.

The UK is one of four countries which have been identified as current coronavirus hot spots on the continent following a second wave of the pandemic. The others are the France, Russia and Spain.
