Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday announced two new measures to contain a resurgence in the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

A public curfew will be imposed from 12.30 am until 5 am and the mandatory use of face masks outdoors will take effect from Saturday 6 am in areas where there is a greater outbreak of the virus.

The announcement came as health authorities announced 882 new coronavirus cases. Thursday's figures surpassed Wednesday's record daily increase of 865 cases. Authorities also reported 15 additional deaths.

Mitsotakis had previously appealed to the public to comply with all measures to contain the spread of the virus in order to avoid a potential new lockdown.

He said a new lockdown will further strain the already-battered economy.
