African Union welcomes signing of ceasefire agreement in Libya

The African Union has welcomed the signing of an agreement for a ceasefire in Libya on Friday and called on the parties to respect this important development.

"I welcome the signing of a ceasefire in Libya and I call on all parties to respect the letter and the spirit of this important development", underlines the president of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat said in a statement shared on the African Union website.

The delegations of the Libyan Mixed Military Commission within the framework of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission have been meeting since Monday in Geneva, under the aegis of the UN, signed on Friday an agreement for a ceasefire in the country.

"The Libyan parties have reached a permanent ceasefire agreement across Libya. This achievement represents an important turning point towards peace and stability in Libya," said the UN Support Mission in Libya (Manul).

The Chairperson also reiterated the African Union's readiness to assist in the implementation of the ceasefire and to contribute to create the necessary conditions for the resumption of dialogue between all Libyan stakeholders for a durable solution.
