Kenya's COVID-19 infections have topped the 60,000 mark as the country continues to see an upsurge in its daily new cases,

The ministry of health reported 1,109 new cases on Friday, taking the country's total tally to 60,704.

"From the cases 1073 are Kenyans and 36 are foreigners," it said.

In the last 24 hours, 21 patients died from the disease, bringing Kenya's total fatalities to 1,093.

Kenya is one of only nine countries in Africa whose COVID-19 caseloads have surpassed the 60,000 mark.

The East African country has seen a recent resurgence in daily new cases, prompting President Uhuru Kenyatta to brand October "the most tragic month in our fight against COVID."

In response, Kenyatta extended a national nighttime curfew to 3 January 2021.

According to the ministry of health, some 40,131 patients successfully recovered from the virus.
