Kenya's nationwide death toll from the coronavirus pandemic rose to 1,093 on Friday after the Ministry of Health reported 21 more fatalities.

It was the second consecutive day that the ministry reported 21 fatalities, the highest single-day number of deaths since March.

"Sadly, we have lost 21 patients to the disease bringing the fatality to 1,093. Our sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their loved ones," the ministry said.

The ministry also reported 1,109 new confirmed cases from a sample size of 7,153, pushing the total number of cases over the 60,000 mark to 60,704.

The East African country's number of recoveries also surpassed 40,000 after 938 patients recovered from the disease. 856 of the recoveries were reported from the Home-Based Care Program, while 82 patients were discharged from various hospitals.

Earlier this week, the government announced new measures to tackle a resurgence of the pandemic within the country.

The public were urged to follow the health protocols and were warned of consequences to those who violated them.
