Iota strengthened into a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale and is forecast to make landfall in northeastern Nicaragua on Monday night, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
The hurricane was located about 100 miles (160 km) east-southeast of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, packing maximum sustained winds of 160 miles (260 km) per hour.
