The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kenya rose to 77,372 as the health ministry on Sunday reported 968 new infections.

The health ministry also reported 14 new virus related fatalities, taking the country's total death toll to 1,380.

Kenya is one of only eight countries in Africa that have reported more than 70,000 cases.

Its caseload is the seventh-highest on the continent, shadowed only by tallies reported by South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia, Tunisia and Libya.

The East African country had started seeing a decline in new infections, but then begun experiencing a resurgence in October, a month labelled as the deadliest by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The health ministry reiterated calls for Kenyans to adhere to the laid out COVID-19 protocols in order to curb further spread of the virus.
