The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Kenya has surpassed the 80,000 mark, making it only the seventh African country to hit the milestone.

The Ministry of Health announced 780 new cases on Thursday, taking the East African country's total number of infections to 80,102.

From the new cases reported, 754 were Kenyans while the remaining 26 were foreigners

Only South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia, Tunisia and Libya have higher caseloads.

Kenya's ministry of health also announced 10 new COVID-19 related deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number fatalities to 1,427.

Even though the country continues to report a high number of daily new infections asper standards in Africa, authorities remain confident the situation will be brought under control soon.

The government has set a 4 January date for schools to fully reopen.

The country is however still under a national nighttime curfew and a ban on large public gatherings.
