A terror convict behind the deadly 2015 attack on a Kenyan university committed suicide in his prison cell, police confirmed on Sunday.

Kenyan newspaper, Nation, reports that the convict, Rashid Charles Mberesero, hang himself on on Friday in his cell using a blanket.

The Tanzanian was serving a life sentence following his 2019 conviction for the attack on Garissa University that left 148 people dead, most of them students, and close to 100 others injured.

He was sentenced alongside two accomplices; Mohamed Abdi Abikar and Hassan Aden Hassan.

The 2015 attack was the second deadliest attack in Kenya's history, after the 1998 al-Qaeda bombing of the U.S. embassy which left over 200 people dead.

At the time of the attack on April 3, 2015, nearly 900 students were within the institution.

The attackers stormed the campus at dawn before shooting indiscriminately around the administration, dormitory region and classroom blocks.

Somalia-based Islamist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.
