Romain Grosjean escaped with minor burns after his Haas burst into flames on the first lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday after he hit a barrier.

The 34-year-old was engulfed in the ball of flames for around 30 seconds after his car caught fire.

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner confirmed Grosjean was out of danger but had been rushed to hospital after the incident for further checks.

"Romain is doing okay, I don't want to make a medical comment but he had light burns on his hands and ankles. Obviously he's shaken... I want to thank the rescue crews who are very quick. The marshals and FIA people they did a great job, it was scary," said Steiner.

A red flag was deployed immediately after the crash, sending the rest of the drivers back to the pits until the track was cleared and declared safe for racing.

Following the incident, other drivers and officials sent their messages of support for Grosjean.

"I'm so grateful Romain is safe. Wow... the risk we take is no joke, for those of you out there that forget that we put our life on the line for this sport and for what we love to do. Thankful to the FIA for the massive strides we've taken for Romain to walk away from that safely," said Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.

"Massive relief to see Romain is ok. Huge credit to all the teams, the FIA and F1 for all the safety measures we have in the sport today," said Williams driver George Russell.
