Kenya on Monday reported 302 new COVID-19 infections from tests conducted over the last 24 hours, taking its total number of confirmed cases to 83,618.

The ministry of health noted that of the new cases recorded, 286 were Kenyans while the remaining 16 were foreigners.

The ministry also announced 17 new COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the cumulative number of fatalities to 1,469.

It noted that the number of infections across different counties had increased, a tend similar to what has been seen in different parts of the world.

As the country's number of COVID-19 infections continues to rise, President Uhuru Kenyatta held a meeting with the National Emergency Response Committee (NERC) to review implications of the ongoing pandemic.

Kenyatta has in the past warned Kenyans against flouting the laid down COVID-19 protocols, saying the government would not hesitate to impose stricter measures if the situation deteriorates.

Kenya's caseload is the sixth-highest in Africa, only shadowed by tallies reported by South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia and Tunisia.
