Egyptian giants Al Ahly defeated El Gaish on penalties at the Borg El Arab Stadium late on Saturday to win the Egypt Cup and secure an impressive treble.

Al Ahly won 3-2 on post-match penalties after the game had ended 1-1 after both normal and extra time.

It was a record-extending 37th triumph in the Cup for Al Ahly, their first since 2017, which is 10 more than the next club, bitter rivals Zamalek.

After a goalless first half, Al Ahly, who were strong favourites for the final, took the lead through Mahmoud Kahraba in the 65th minute just minutes after he came on as a substitute.

They appeared to be heading to victory but then Nasr Mansi netted a dramatic equalizer in injury time to force the game into extra time.

With neither side being able to strike a decisive blow in the intervening 30 minutes, the game went to penalties.

Al Ahly successfully converted their first three penalties while El Gaish only scored with one of their first efforts. However, Ayman Achraf missed his effort for Al Ahly and Mostafa Gamal scored for El Gaish to make it 3-2. Champions League final hero Magdy Afsha then missed his effort but it did not matter as Hussein Al Sayed also missed his spot-kick to hand Al Ahly the title.

The Egyptian Cup was the final trophy on offer after the Red Devils had earlier won the Egypt Premier League and CAF Champions League.

It was the second treble that the club had won after similar success in the 2005/2006 season. It is also the 15th time that it has won the league and cup double.
