The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa surpassed the 2.32 million mark on Friday as different parts of the continent continue to report steady surges.
According to figures published by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent had reported 2,323,845 cases by Friday afternoon, with a death toll of 55,265.
South Africa remains the hardest-hit country on the continent, having recorded 836,764 confirmed cases and 22,747 deaths.
The country accounts for 36 percent of Africa's virus caseload and 41.16 percent of its fatalities.
Morocco is the second-worst hit county, having registered 391,529 cases and 6,492 deaths.
The only other countries that have reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases are Egypt (120,147), Ethiopia (115,360) and Tunisia (107,814).
In terms of deaths, three countries – South Africa and Morocco included – have recorded more than 5,000 fatalities.
In total, ten countries in Africa have reported more than 1,000 COVID-19 related fatalities.
The Africa CDC data also showed that the continent had registered 1,982,277 successful recoveries.
