Kenya's ministry of health on Friday reported 673 new COVID-19 infections from a sample size of 8,230 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, taking the country's total number of cases to 90,978.

In the same period, 14 new COVID-19 related deaths were recorded, taking the total number of fatalities to 1,582.

Kenya is one of only seven countries in Africa that have registered more than 90,000 COVID-19 cases.

Its number of infections is only shadowed by figures reported by South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia and Tunisia.

The East African country continues to see a steady upsurge in its caseload, as fears increase over a possible increase in the number of new daily infections during the festive period.

Stakeholders have urged the government to impose stricter measures in efforts to curb an upsurge of new cases as the year winds down. Many Kenyans often travel upcountry for family functions as others travel to tourist destinations during December.

Containment measures that are currently in place include a nationwide nighttime curfew, a ban on large public gatherings and an order for mandatory wearing of face coverings wile in public.
