The United States on Saturday reported more than 3,300 COVID-19 related new deaths, the largest single-day toll since the start of the pandemic, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

The country remains the hardest-hit country globally by the pandemic, having recorded 15,860,841 confirmed infections and 295,621 deaths.

It accounts for 22.25 percent of the world's reported COVID-19 infections and 18.49 percent of the virus-related global fatalities.

On Friday, the U.S. authorized the use of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, with the first inoculations expected within days.

The country has also doubled its purchase of the vaccine developed by Moderna. The agreement for an additional 100 million doses takes the total bought by the U.S. to 200 million.
