Uganda's Ministry of Health on Sunday reported 461 new confirmed coronavirus cases, taking the total number of cases in the country to 27,532.

The capital Kampala reported a majority of the 460 cases from contacts and alerts with 281 followed by Wakiso (67), Kasese (31), Mbarara (16) and Kabale (11) districts.

Among the new cases was one Ugandan truck driver who had come into the country through the Malaba point of entry at the border with Kenya.

The ministry also reported one additional COVID-19-related death taking the tally to 221. Meanwhile, 82 more patients recovered from the disease pushing the number of recoveries to 9,826.

Uganda has reported a steady increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the last few months with the ministry blaming the phenomenon on complacency by citizens and persistent violation of existing health protocols.

One of the issues highlighted by the ministry was COVID-19 asymptomatic patients who are not admitted to hospitals integrating with the rest of the public thereby spreading the coronavirus.

Despite the steady increase in cases, the government has progressively announced an easing of restrictions designed to contain the spread of the pandemic.
