Defending champions Al Ahly and last season's runners-up Zamalek kicked off the new Egyptian Premier League season where they left off last season recording victories on the opening weekend to occupy first and second spots respectively.

Al Ahly began their quest for a record-extending 43rd league title with a 3-1 win against Misr Lel Makkasa at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday while rivals Zamalek defeated Arab Contractors 2-0 at the Arab Contractors Stadium on Saturday.

Second half goals from Mohamed Kahraba and Amr Soleya gave Al Ahly the win after Marwan Hamdi had cancelled out Ali Maaloul's opener for the champions.

Meanwhile, an own goal by Khaled Husseiny and a late strike from Mostafa Mohamed saw Zamalek secure all three points against Arab Contractors.

Pyramids F.C., who finished third last season, fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Al Ittihad and newly-promoted Ceramica Cleopatra began life in the top-flight with an encouraging 2-0 win against El-Entag El-Harby.

Aswan SC edged Enppi by a solitary goal to round off the weekend's winners. Other games saw El Gaish and El Gouna settle for a 1-1 draw as did Wadi Degla and promoted National Bank Egypt while El Masry and El Ismaily played out a barren draw.

The final game of the first game week sees Smouha host another promoted side Ghazl El Mahallah later on Monday.
