The number of COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 2,408,064 on Wednesday with a death toll of 57,057, according to data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

The continent continues to see a steady surge in its caseload even though some countries have begun seeing a decline in new infections.

South Africa remains to be the hardest-hit country by the pandemic, having reported 873,679 cases and 23,661 fatalities.

The country accounts for 36.28 percent of the continent's caseload and 41.47 percent of the reported deaths.

Morocco (403,619), Egypt (122,609), Ethiopia (117,542) and Tunisia (113,241) are the only other countries that have recorded more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections in Africa.

A total of 10 countries on the continent – including South Africa – have reported more than 1,000 COVID-19 related deaths.

The Africa CDC data also showed that Africa has registered 2,037,148 successful recoveries from the disease.
