The U.S. President-elect Joe Biden has picked Miguel Cardona, the education commissioner for Connecticut and a former public school teacher, to serve as the Secretary of Education.

Biden has promised to chose someone who had worked within a school set up to lead the Education Department.

Cardona began his career as an elementary school teacher before becoming a principal. He has been Connecticut education commissioner since 2019

He has been urging schools to reopen amid the pandemic, warning that many students were falling behind in the virtual learning set up.

He argues that the "digital divide" leaves millions of low-income students unable to keep up in virtual classrooms.

Biden himself has in the past pledged to reopen schools in his first 100 days in office, if Congress funds protective equipment and other measures needed to make schools safer.
