Africa's number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 2,644,112 on Sunday as the countries on the continent continue to record steady rises in their caseloads.

The figure was confirmed by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), which also noted that the number of COVID-19 related deaths stood at 62,366.

South Africa is the worst-affected African country by the pandemic, having registered 994,911 cases and 26,521 fatalities.

The country's virus caseload is more than twice the number reported by the second hardest-hit African state.

Morocco's 430,562 infections are the second-highest while its 7,204 deaths are the third-highest on the continent.

The only other country's that have reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases are Egypt (131,315), Tunisia (130,230) and Ethiopia (122,413).

A total of ten countries in Africa have recorded more than 1,000 virus-related fatalities.

The Africa CDC data also showed that the continent had recorded 2,212,975 successful recoveries.
