South Africa's COVID-19 caseload surpassed the one million mark on Sunday as the country continued to see a steady surge in virus numbers.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize reported 9,502 new infections from tests conducted over the past 24 hours, taking the country's total number of cases to 1,004,413.

South Africa has been hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, with twice as many cases as Morocco, the second worst hit country on the continent with 432,079 cases.

Its death toll from COVID-19, with 26,735 deaths, is also more than three times the number registered by Egypt, whose 7,352 fatalities are the second highest in Africa.

Mkhize urged South Africans to "adhere to non-pharmaceutical interventions to prevent the further spread of the virus."
