Burkina Faso registered 1,074,993 internally displaced people due to insecurity as of the end of December in 2020, an official report has said.

"This represents a 2.4 percent increase compared to a total of 1,049,767 people registered as of November 10, 2020," said the report released Saturday here by the national council for emergency relief and rehabilitation.

According to the report, insecurity related displaced people comprised 53 percent of women and 47 percent of men, while children under 15 account for 54 percent of the overall displaced people.

Sanmatenga province in the central-north and Soum and Seno provinces in the Sahel region were the hardest hit regions in Burkina Faso which have been plagued by terrorist attacks since 2015.

Official figures indicate a nearly 92 percent increase in the number of displaced people between December 2019 and December 2020.
