UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday said he took "full responsibility" for the government's response to the coronavirus pandemic which has claimed more than 100,000 lives in the country.

Johnson began his daily briefing at Downing Street by offering his condolences to all people affected, calling the loss of life "appalling and tragic."

"I am deeply sorry for every life that has been lost and, of course, as prime minister I take full responsibility for everything the government has done. What I can tell you is that we truly did everything we could and continue to do everything that we can to minimize loss of life and minimize suffering in what has been a very, very difficult stage," Johnson said.

The UK on Tuesday registered over 100,000 deaths due to COVID-19, according to the government's latest daily figures. There were 1,631 deaths reported on Monday, taking the overall death toll to 100,162.

The United States, India, Brazil and Mexico have also registered more than 100,000 deaths from the coronavirus, but they are much larger countries than the UK.

Johnson pledged that government will do all it can to minimize the loss of life as he urged people to stay at home and protect the National Health Service and save lives.

He further expressed "total confidence" in UK's supply of vaccines from abroad, adding that he "fully expects" the European Union to honor all contracts.
