The ministry of health in Uganda reported 37 new confirmed COVID-19 cases pushing the total to 39,979.

The capital Kampala reported the highest proportion of new cases with 18 while seven other districts accounted for the remaining 17 cases among “contacts and alerts".

Two Ugandan truck drivers who came from South Sudan through Elegu point of entry also tested positive for COVID-19.

The figures continued the recent trend where the East African country has reported fewer than 70 new daily cases since January 28, according to figures from the ministry. Since then, the ministry has reported a total of 555 new cases up to Friday.

Towards the close of last year and early this year when Uganda reported a steady increase in the number of cases with the ministry blaming the phenomenon on complacency by citizens and persistent violation of existing health protocols.

The ministry also reported no additional COVID-19-related deaths leaving the death toll at 328 while the number of recoveries rose by 50 to stand at 14,520.

Uganda is one of several African countries slated to receive COVID-19 vaccines before the end of February, according to a report released on Wednesday by COVAX and the World Health Organization.
