Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta is scheduled to address the nation on Friday regarding the East African country's COVID-19 status.

Various government-imposed measures against the virus are set to lapse tomorrow, having been announced in January for a period of 60 days.

These measures include a nationwide nighttime curfew, a ban on large public gatherings and mandatory wearing of face coverings in public.

The lapse of the containment measures comes as the country is experiencing its third wave of virus infections.

Minister of Health Mutahi Kagwe on Wednesday declared that Kenya had officially plunged into its third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This declaration has prompted some government officials to urge President Kenyatta to extend the containment measures even further.

The president's speech also comes as the country will be marking one year since it announced its first case of the coronavirus.

By Thursday, Kenya had reported 111,185 infections with 1,899 deaths.
