Kenya on Friday reported 750 new daily COVID-19 infections, taking its cumulative confirmed cases to 111,935.

The figures were announced by the ministry of health, which also noted that two patients had succumbed to the disease in the same period, raising the country's total number of deaths to 1,901.

Kenya is one of nine countries in Africa that have registered more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections.

The country has recently experienced a hike in its number of daily new cases, prompting the ministry of health to declare that a third wave of virus infections is underway.

Earlier on Friday, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the extension by 60 days of a nationwide nighttime curfew and a 30-day ban on political gatherings in the country.

The president urged Kenyans to continue adhering to the laid down containment measures even as health authorities continue administering vaccines.
