The government of Egypt has sent medical aid to Libya to help boost the country's health systems amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Tuesday flagged off two military planes loaded with tons of medical supplies for use by Libya's health sector.

The shipment, which was donated by Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population, arrived in Sebha International Airport where it was received by Libyan officials.

Tripoli expressed its gratitude to Egypt for the shipment, noting that it was important in supporting the health sector which is battling COVID-19.

The Egyptian presidency said the aid is an affirmation of the historical and national ties between Egypt and Libya as well as the deep bonds of brotherhood and friendship that unite the two brotherly peoples.

By Wednesday, Libya had reported 170,045 confirmed COVID-19 infections with 2,834 deaths.

The country is on a recovery path following years of conflict that affected service provision, including in the health sector.

Egypt and the larger Middle East has pledged to stand by Tripoli in its quest to achieve lasting peace as well as its plan to rebuild the country.
