Switzerland on Wednesday further relaxed its COVID-19 restrictions as it continues its gradual reopening following weeks of lockdown.

The country's health ministry said spectators will be allowed to attend sporting events starting Monday, April 19, while cinemas, theatres and concerts may also have audiences. These changes will however still be subject to some restrictions and health protocols are still to be followed.

Restaurants with outdoor seating areas will be allowed to use the spaces, while indoor sports and cultural activities will also be allowed, as well as certain matches and competitions.

"Although the situation remains precarious, the Federal Council deems the risk associated with these reopening steps to be acceptable," the ministry said.

"It is possible to wear a mask and maintain social distancing in all of the activities that are once again to be permitted, indeed, barring a few exceptions, it is a requirement."

By Wednesday, Switzerland had reported 627,968 COVID-19 infections with 10,485 deaths.
