The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa has reached 4,437,846 according to the latest figures from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The agency also says some 118,133 deaths have been recorded on the continent as of Tuesday afternoon.

Africa, like the rest of the world, is currently focusing on mass vaccinations in efforts to contain the disease that has ravaged the world for more than one year.

By April 15, more than 13.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered on the continent, majority of which were the AstraZeneca jabs.

South Africa remains to be Africa's hardest-hit country by the pandemic, having recorded 1,567,513 infections with 53,757 deaths.

Only eight more countries on the continent have registered more than 100,000 cases, but Morocco's 505,949 infections are the closest to South Africa's tally.

A total of 14 African countries, South Africa included, have reported more than 1,000 deaths.

According to the Africa CDC data, 3,975,424 patients successfully recovered from the disease by Tuesday.
