The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Kenya surpassed the 2,500 mark on Monday as the country continues to battle a third wave of the virus.

The Ministry of Health announced 20 new deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's total number of fatalities to 2,501.

The East African nation also recorded 241 new positive cases from a sample size of 2,515 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, raising the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections to 151,894.

Kenya's caseload is the eighth-highest in Africa, only shadowed by tallies reported by South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Libya and Nigeria.

Its death toll is also the eighth-highest recorded on the continent.

The health ministry on Monday also announced 636 successful recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 102,278.
