Surge testing is being deployed in parts of Birmingham after a case of the coronavirus variant first detected in South Africa was identified in the West Midlands region.

According to Sky News, authorities are targeting Alum Rock, Glebe Farm and Tile Cross for testing and all those in the affected places have been urged to come forward for a test.

The person who tested positive for the variant has entered self-isolation, and all who came into contact have been identified.

The Sky News report notes that health officials said initial investigations suggest the case is "not linked to a case previously identified in the Birmingham and Sandwell areas".
