Fully vaccinated Americans will no longer need to wear face coverings when they are outdoors unless they are in crowded events with strangers, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday in its new eased guidelines.

The agency describes a person who is fully vaccinated as one who has spent two weeks after taking their second dose in a 2-dose series, or one who has spent two weeks after a single-dose vaccine.

The new CDC guidelines are a step closer in the quest to return to normalcy from the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed more than 572,000 Americans.

It outlines that upon full vaccination, Americans will now be allowed to take outdoor walks, runs and bike rides with other family members without waring a face mask. They will also be allowed to attend small, outdoor gatherings with fully vaccinated and unvaccinated people without wearing a mask themselves.

Other restrictions were also lifted to allow fully vaccinated people not to wear masks when dining at an outdoor restaurant.

The CDC however still recommends that even when fully vaccinated, Americans should still wear masks when attending crowded, outdoor events, like a live performances, parades, or sports event.

By Tuesday, the U.S. had reported more than 32.13 million COVID-19 infections.

The country has ramped up vaccinations with nearly 140 million Americans having received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
