Kenya's Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has nominated Justice Martha Koome to become the country's Chief Justice, an appointment that would make her the first female to hold the position.

JSC announced Koome's nomination on Tuesday, days after a televised interviews process was concluded.

The body forwarded her name to President Uhuru Kenyatta for appointment.

"After lengthy deliberations and careful consideration of the performance of various candidates the JSC has unanimously recommended the appointment of Hon Koome Martha Karabu as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya and has submitted her name to the President for appointment," a statement from the JSC read.

While announcing the pick, JSC Vice Chairperson Prof. Olive Mugenda said the commission's nomination of Koome was unanimous.

Koome was among 10 candidates who were interviewed for the position to succeed retired Chief Justice David Maraga.

The search for Kenya's next Chief Justice comes ahead of the country's general elections in which Kenyans will elect a new president.

Koome boasts of an illustrious career spanning 33 years in private legal practice and on the bench.

She officially joined the Judiciary in 2003, having been a human rights defender prior to that.
