Kenya has administered more than 911,000 COVID-19 vaccines as the fight to contain the pandemic continues.

The country rolled out its mass vaccination drive on March 5 after receiving some 1.2 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The campaign gave priority to high-risk groups including healthcare workers, the elderly and people offering other essential services.

According to the latest data from the health ministry, 911,515 people have already received first shots of the vaccines, some 160,468 being healthcare workers, joined by 531,540 people aged 58 years and above, 142,624 teachers and 76,578 security officers.

The East African country expects to obtain some 25 million more doses for its over 52 million population, as plans remain in place to start the administration of the second jabs.

So far, Kenya has reported 162,666 COVID-19 infections with 2,865 deaths. Its caseload is the eighth-highest in Africa.
