U.K. soccer fans have been urged not to travel to Turkey for the UEFA Champions League final after the country was added onto the U.K. travel red list.

Chelsea are scheduled to take on Manchester City at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul on May 29^th to decide the new champion of Europe.

In an advisory announced by the U.K. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, U.K. residents were urged to avoid nonessential travel to countries in the red list.

Schapps said countries in the list "should not be visited except in the most extreme circumstances".

He noted that the U.K. government was open to hosting the game in the country if UEFA would allow it.

"The U.K. has a successful track record of hosting matches with spectators so we are well placed to do it," the BBC quotes Schapps.

"So we are very open to it, but it is actually in the end a decision for UEFA to make. But given it is two English clubs in the final, we look forward to hearing what they have to say."

U.K. residents returning from red-list countries are required to quarantine for 10 days at a government-approved hotel.
