Kenya on Sunday reported 316 new COVID-19 infections from a sample size of 4,251 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, taking its total number of cases to 163,554.

The country has recently seen a slight decline in its daily new cases compared to numbers registered in March and early April.

According to the figures released by the health ministry, 12 more virus-related deaths were also recorded in the same period, bringing the East African country's total number of fatalities to 2,895.

Both Kenya's caseload and its death toll are the eighth-highest in Africa.

The health ministry also noted that some 111,191 successful recoveries have been reported in the country.

The country still has various government-imposed containment measures in place, including the mandatory wearing of face masks, a ban on public and political gatherings as well as a nationwide nighttime curfew.

A mass vaccination drive is also underway, with priority give to healthcare workers, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions.
