Atletico Madrid were crowned champions of Spain's la Liga on Saturday after securing a 2-1 win away to Real Valladolid on the final day of the season.

Atletico (83) went into the game two points ahead of city rivals Real Madrid (81) and needed to at least match their rivals' result to claim the title.
They, however, got off to a bad start falling a goal behind in just the 18th minute when Oscar Plano raced clear of the visitors' defence and slotted the ball past Jan Oblak.

Atletico, who went into the break behind, pushed on for the equalizer and was duly rewarded 12 minutes into the second half after Angel Correa received the ball on the edge of the penalty area, jinked past a couple of defenders to poke the ball into the net.

The comeback was completed 10 minutes later by Luis Suarez who collected a loose pass from just inside Valladolid's half and sprinted and curled in a low left-foot shot.

That was Suarez's 21st goal of a season in which he proved to be a shrewd buy from La Liga rivals Barcelona.

Despite a tense finish, Atletico held on to win the game and claim a first league title since 2014 and an 11th one overall. Real Madrid, meanwhile, also came from behind to defeat Europa League finalists Villarreal 2-1 at the Alfredo di Stéfano Stadium in Madrid.

Karim Benzema and Luka Modric each scored in the 87th and 92nd minutes respectively cancelling out Yeremi Pino's opener. The win was not enough for Real who still secured second place while Barcelona, who edged already-relegated Eibar 1-0, finished third with 79 points.
