Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic remained on course for a quarterfinal meeting at the French Open after both men won their respective second round matches.

Federer, the 2009 Roland Garros champion, defeated Croatia's Marin Cilic in four sets 6-2, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 in an impressive performance.

There have been question marks about Federer's chances at Roland Garros particularly as he suffered a shock defeat to Pablo Andujar in the second round of his final warmup event in Geneva.

The 39-year-old has been trying to get himself back into shape after missing most of the past year due to a knee injury but he followed up a solid first round win with another against a player he has only lost once to.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will next face Dominik Koepfer of Germany for a place in the fourth round.

Djokovic, meanwhile, romped into the third round with a straight-sets victory against Pablo Cuevas.

Djokovic, seeking his 19th Grand Slam title, won 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and will play Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis.

Should Federer or Djokovic get to the semifinals, a titanic clash with record 13-time champion Rafael Nadal could be on the cards.

Nadal, referred to as the King of Clay for his dominance and remarkable achievements on the surface, is scheduled to play Frenchman Richard Gasquet later on Thursday.
