Kenya's health ministry on Saturday announced that the country had recorded 714 new COVID-19 infections from 6,039 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, taking the country's total number of cases to 178,792.

In the same period, 10 virus-related deaths were registered, taking the total number of fatalities to 3,447.

The country is experiencing a third wave of the pandemic, one feared could be deadlier because of the already detected Delta COVID-19 variant.

Earlier this week, the government imposed stricter containment measures in the country's western region following a spike in cases.

While a nationwide nighttime curfew starts at 10pm and ends at 4am, 13 counties in the western region, including the third largest city of Kisumu, have theirs beginning at 7pm.

Other measures imposed by the government include a ban on large public gatherings and a mandatory wearing of face masks.

Kenya has also rolled out a mass vaccination exercise, with 1,181,588 vaccines already given.
