The number of COVID-19 infections in Kenya rose to 179,075 on Sunday after the ministry of health recorded 283 new cases from 3,452 tests conducted in the last 24 hours.

In the same period, nine new deaths were registered, taking the country's total number of virus-related fatalities to 3,456.

The country is experiencing a third wave of the pandemic, with its western region particularly seeing a steady spike in daily new cases.

The government responded by imposing stricter measures in the region, including a longer nighttime curfew. While the rest of the country starts its curfew at 10pm and ends at 4am, 13 counties in the western region, including the third largest city of Kisumu, have theirs beginning at 7pm.

Other measures imposed by the government include a ban on large public gatherings and a mandatory wearing of face masks.

Kenya has also rolled out a mass vaccination exercise, with 1,183,376 vaccines already given.
