Algerian Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad resigned on Thursday, paving way for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to name a new cabinet.

The presidency confirmed Djerad’s resignation, noting that the president had accepted his decision.

Djerad was appointed as Prime Minister in December 2019, and was tasked with wining back people's trust after months of street protests.

His resignation comes four months after the president made a partial cabinet reshuffle, and signed a decree to dissolve the National People's Assembly (lower house of parliament).

His appointment came days after Tebboune, himself a former prime minister, was elected as the new president of the North African country to succeed veteran president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was forced from office in April 2019 in the face of mass demonstrations.

The new government that will be appointed will have to tackle what Reuters terms a deep financial and economic crisis due to a fall in oil prices.
