U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday announced she will create a select committee to investigate events surrounding the January 6 attack on the Capitol and issues related to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power.

The development comes nearly a month after Republicans blocked the creation of an independent commission to probe the insurrection.

"This morning, with great solemnity and sadness, I'm announcing that the House will be establishing a select committee on the January 6 insurrection," CNN quotes Pelosi. "The select committee will investigate and report on the facts and the causes of the attack and it will report recommendations for the prevention of any future attack."

The select committee is expected to spark a political battle, with Republicans largely labeling the move as a politically motivated agenda by the Democrats.
