Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro was on Sunday discharged from a Sao Paulo hospital where he had been admitted for four days for treatment for complications following a near-fatal 2018 stabbing.
The 66-year-old went to the Vila Nova Star hospital in Brasilia early on Wednesday, with his office initially saying it was to undergo tests for chronic hiccups.
Later, the president's office said Antonio Luiz Macedo, the surgeon who operated on Bolsonaro in 2018, had decided the president should go to Sao Paulo for additional tests to investigate an obstructed intestine and possible emergency surgery.
Following his discharge on Sunday, Bolsonaro said he would resume work on Monday.
"I'll be back in the presidency tomorrow," Reuters quotes Bolsonaro.
"I had to undergo a diet, I did what had to be done ... I wanted to leave from day one, but they didn't let me. I hope in 10 days I'll be eating barbecued ribs, eating anything," he said.
The president will remain under observation as an outpatient.
